Messy Church

Messy Church started at St Wilfrid’s Church, Cowplain in 2004 and has been growing rapidly ever since, spreading across the world and now being represented in all major Christian denominations. Over 1,000 Messy Churches have been registered on the Messy Church network directory.

The idea of a messy church is to provide worship, learning and fellowship in a relaxed and fun way that will appeal to adults and children alike. Its aim is to introduce Jesus to people who may not have had the opportunity to meet him before and it models and promotes good ways of growing as a family – a nuclear family, an extended family, a global family and a local church family.

A typical Messy Church will have the following elements:

  • A relaxed welcome time with drinks and snacks.
  • An activity-based learning time, with Bible-themed crafts, competitions, games, prayers and other activities.
  • A short explicit worship time, usually with story, song and prayer.
  • A sit-down meal that everyone shares together.
